CASA DO RIO, DOURO VALLEY

CASA DO RIO

LOCATION: Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Douro Valley, Portugal

ARCHITECTURE: Francisco Vieira de Campos

STYLE: Contemporary TIMber Architecture / Landscape Integration

Set within the vineyards of Quinta do Vallado in Portugal’s Upper Douro Valley, Casa do Rio is an intimate architectural retreat overlooking the river. Designed by architect Francisco Vieira de Campos, the hotel offers a thoughtful interpretation of contemporary hospitality rooted in the agricultural landscape.

The building occupies a secluded position among vineyards and olive groves, where its elongated form follows the natural contours of the hillside. Rather than dominating the setting, the architecture establishes a quiet presence, allowing the surrounding landscape to remain the central experience.

Timber defines the architectural character of Casa do Rio. The building’s horizontal composition and natural material palette create a strong connection with the land, while its carefully considered proportions give the structure a distinctive contemporary identity.

Large glazed openings frame expansive views across the Douro River and the terraced vineyards. The relationship between interior and exterior is deliberately fluid, with natural light and the changing colours of the landscape becoming essential elements of the spatial experience.

Inside, the design is restrained and tactile. Timber surfaces, understated furnishings and a warm palette establish an atmosphere of simplicity, allowing the surrounding landscape to provide the primary visual focus.

The hotel contains just ten rooms, reinforcing the intimate scale of the project. Outdoor terraces and a swimming pool extend the architectural experience into the landscape, offering uninterrupted views of the river valley.

Casa do Rio demonstrates how contemporary architecture can engage with a culturally significant agricultural setting through careful positioning, material sensitivity and an understated architectural language.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Casa do Rio represents a refined example of contemporary timber architecture integrated into a historic wine-growing landscape, where a restrained horizontal form, natural materials and carefully framed views establish a sensitive relationship between the built environment and the Douro Valley.
