FURNAS LAKE FOREST LIVING

LOCATION: Furnas, São Miguel, Azores, Portugal

ARCHITECTURE: Fernando Monteiro

STYLE: Contemporary Forest Architecture / Scandinavian-Inspired Minimalism

Hidden within the lush volcanic landscape of São Miguel, Furnas Lake Forest Living offers an intimate architectural retreat surrounded by woodland, gardens and the distinctive natural environment of the Azores. Located close to Furnas Lake, the project explores the relationship between contemporary accommodation and a carefully restored forest landscape.

The architectural concept is centred on a collection of individual timber villas positioned among the trees. Their simple geometric forms and restrained material palette establish a quiet presence within the surrounding vegetation.

Inspired by traditional local granaries, the Japanese cedar villas are elevated above the ground on low concrete supports. This arrangement responds to the island’s humid climate while creating a distinctive relationship between the structures and the landscape beneath them.

Timber plays a central role in the architectural identity of the project. Its natural texture and warm appearance establish a visual connection with the forest, while expansive windows frame views of the surrounding trees and gardens.

Inside, the accommodation follows a philosophy of contemporary simplicity. Open-plan spaces, understated furnishings and a restrained palette create an atmosphere of calm, allowing natural light and the surrounding landscape to remain the primary focus.

The wider property reflects an approach to hospitality that values environmental restoration and the experience of nature. Gardens, woodland and the proximity of Furnas Lake create a setting in which architecture becomes part of a broader ecological landscape.

Furnas Lake Forest Living offers a thoughtful interpretation of contemporary rural hospitality, where modest architectural forms and natural materials encourage a slower, more attentive relationship with place.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Furnas Lake Forest Living demonstrates how contemporary timber architecture can draw upon local building traditions while responding to the environmental conditions of a volcanic island, creating an intimate dialogue between elevated structures, natural materials and the surrounding forest landscape.
