ARCHITECTURE: Luís Rebelo de Andrade
YEAR: 2015
STYLE: Contemporary Heritage Restoration / Landscape Architecture
Overlooking the River Douro in northern Portugal, Six Senses Douro Valley occupies a historic 19th-century manor house surrounded by terraced vineyards and wooded hills. The property offers a distinctive example of contemporary hospitality architecture rooted in the preservation and reinterpretation of an existing estate.
The architectural transformation, led by Portuguese architect Luís Rebelo de Andrade, brings together the character of the original manor and a series of contemporary interventions. Rather than erasing the building’s history, the project establishes a dialogue between traditional architectural forms and the requirements of modern hospitality.
The historic structure retains its strong presence within the landscape, while carefully integrated additions introduce new spatial relationships. Natural materials, restrained detailing and contemporary surfaces create a sense of continuity between the original architecture and its renewed purpose.
Large windows and outdoor terraces frame views of the Douro Valley, allowing the surrounding vineyards and changing natural light to become essential elements of the architectural experience. The relationship between interior spaces and the landscape is central to the hotel’s identity.
Inside, the design combines the warmth of a traditional Portuguese estate with contemporary simplicity. Timber, stone, tactile fabrics and carefully considered furnishings create an atmosphere of quiet sophistication without overwhelming the architectural character of the building.
The surrounding gardens, terraces and vineyard landscape reinforce the connection between the estate and its setting. Architecture and nature are experienced together, reflecting the agricultural and cultural history of the Douro region.
Six Senses Douro Valley demonstrates how an established historic property can be thoughtfully adapted for contemporary use while retaining the qualities that define its identity.
