7132 HOTEL & THERME VALS

LOCATION: Vals, Graubünden, Switzerland

ARCHITECTURE: Peter Zumthor (Therme Vals)

YEAR: 1996 (completion of thermal baths)

STYLE: Architectural Minimalism / Contemporary Stone Architecture

Set within the dramatic alpine landscape of Vals in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, 7132 Hotel is closely associated with one of the most influential works of contemporary architecture: the thermal baths designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. Completed in 1996, Therme Vals is an extraordinary exploration of the relationship between architecture, material, light and the surrounding mountain landscape.

Rather than creating a conventional spa building, Zumthor conceived the baths as a sequence of monumental stone spaces embedded into the hillside. The architecture appears to emerge from the mountain itself, establishing a powerful connection between the built environment and the geological character of the region.

The structure is constructed primarily from locally quarried Valser quartzite, arranged in precise horizontal layers. This distinctive material gives the building its tactile quality and visual continuity with the surrounding alpine terrain. The stone surfaces create an atmosphere that is simultaneously monumental and intimate.

Inside, the architecture unfolds through a carefully orchestrated sequence of spaces. Narrow passages lead into expansive bathing chambers, while changes in ceiling height, temperature and light create a rhythm of compression and openness. Movement through the building becomes an essential part of the architectural experience.

Natural light enters through carefully positioned openings and narrow gaps between structural elements. As daylight changes throughout the day, the stone surfaces reveal subtle variations in colour and texture, creating an ever-changing relationship between light, water and material.

The pools themselves are integrated into the architectural composition rather than treated as separate facilities. Water reflects the surrounding stone surfaces, softening the geometry of the spaces and reinforcing the sensory qualities of the building.

The relationship between interior and exterior is particularly significant. From within the baths, carefully framed views reveal the surrounding mountains, reminding visitors of the landscape beyond the enclosed stone chambers. The building’s restrained exterior presence allows the alpine setting to remain visually dominant.

Although the thermal baths form part of the wider 7132 hospitality complex, they possess a distinct architectural identity. Zumthor’s intervention demonstrates how architecture can shape an experience through proportion, materiality and atmosphere rather than decorative expression.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Therme Vals is a landmark of contemporary architecture, demonstrating Peter Zumthor’s exceptional ability to transform local stone, natural light and water into a deeply atmospheric spatial experience. Its integration into the alpine landscape and its precise material expression have made it one of the most celebrated examples of architectural minimalism in the world.
