NOT EVERY FARMHOUSE DREAMS OF BECOMING A HOTEL. BUT THIS ONE SEEMS TO HAVE TAKEN RATHER WELL TO THE IDEA. TUCKED AWAY IN 130 HECTARES OF MENORCAN COUNTRYSIDE, SON BLANC IS A 19TH-CENTURY FARMSTEAD BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM ARCHITECTS, LOCAL CRAFTSMEN AND A VERY GOOD EYE FOR DETAIL.
THE RESTORATION IS A LESSON IN KNOWING WHAT TO LEAVE ALONE. ORIGINAL STONE ARCHES AND VAULTED CEILINGS SIT COMFORTABLY ALONGSIDE HANDMADE FURNITURE, SOFT LINEN AND WARM EARTHEN TONES. EACH OF THE 14 ROOMS HAS ITS OWN PERSONALITY, WITH CLAY, LOCAL STONE AND RECLAIMED WOOD DOING MOST OF THE DECORATING. NOTHING FEELS OVERWORKED. EVEN THE IMPERFECTIONS SEEM PERFECTLY AT HOME.
The architectural transformation began with the careful restoration of a nineteenth-century Menorcan farmhouse. Working alongside local craftspeople, Atelier du Pont and ARU Arquitectura sought to preserve the building’s original character, revealing its stone vaults, arches and time-worn surfaces. Local marès limestone, wild olive wood and clay introduce a restrained material palette, allowing the interiors to feel both contemporary and deeply connected to the island.
Yet Son Blanc extends far beyond its architecture. Set within 130 hectares of Mediterranean countryside, the estate is also a working farm shaped by the principles of regenerative agriculture. Olive groves, vegetable gardens and orchards supply the seasonal kitchen, whilst the surrounding landscape becomes an essential part of the experience. Here, hospitality is not separated from nature, but thoughtfully woven into its rhythms.
OUTSIDE, OLIVE GROVES, VEGETABLE GARDENS AND A SWIMMING POOL MAKE A CONVINCING ARGUMENT FOR STAYING PUT. MUCH OF WHAT ENDS UP ON THE TABLE COMES STRAIGHT FROM THE FARM, AND THE REST FOLLOWS THE SEASONS. THERE IS YOGA IF YOU FEEL INCLINED, LONG LUNCHES IF YOU DON’T, AND PLENTY OF ROOM TO DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
SOME PLACES ENCOURAGE YOU TO SLOW DOWN. SON BLANC MAKES IT RATHER DIFFICULT NOT TO.
