ACRO SUITES, CRETE

LOCATION: Agia Pelagia, Crete, Greece

ARCHITECTURE: Stavros Peppas (Phase I); Orfanakis Bros (Phase II)

YEAR: 2021

STYLE: Organic Minimalism / Contemporary Mediterranean

Perched on the rugged cliffs of Crete’s northern coastline, Acro Suites is a contemporary retreat where architecture and landscape are closely intertwined. Overlooking the Aegean Sea, the resort draws its identity from the island’s raw natural beauty and rich architectural heritage.

The project was developed in two architectural phases, with the initial design by Stavros Peppas and the subsequent phase by Orfanakis Bros. Conceived as a collection of intimate spaces rather than a conventional hotel complex, its architecture responds to the dramatic coastal setting through natural materials, sculptural forms and a restrained palette of earthy tones.

Local stone, timber and marble establish a tactile connection with the Cretan landscape. Rough textures are balanced by smooth plastered surfaces, while traditional architectural elements, including stone arches and vaulted forms, are reinterpreted through a contemporary design language.

Among the most distinctive spaces are the Cave Suites, where stone walls and sheltered interiors create a sense of intimacy. Private terraces and pools open towards the sea, allowing the surrounding landscape to become an integral part of the architectural experience.

The resort’s Bath House draws inspiration from traditional Byzantine bathing rituals. Curved surfaces, natural stone and carefully controlled light create an atmosphere of stillness, demonstrating how architectural design can contribute to a sense of wellbeing.

Throughout the project, the relationship between built form and nature remains central. The architecture seeks to complement the rocky coastline rather than compete with it, creating a quiet dialogue between material, light and place.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Acro Suites demonstrates how contemporary hospitality architecture can draw upon local materials, traditional forms and the character of a dramatic coastal landscape to create spaces defined by intimacy, simplicity and a strong sense of place.
