CAN FERRERETA, MALLORCA
LOCATION: Santanyí, Mallorca, Spain
ARCHITECTURE: Bastidas Architecture
INTERIOR DESIGN: WIT Architects
YEAR: 2021
STYLE: Contemporary Heritage Restoration / Mediterranean Minimalism
Hidden within the historic streets of Santanyí, Can Ferrereta occupies a carefully restored 17th-century Mallorcan mansion. The project brings together centuries of architectural heritage and contemporary design, creating a quiet dialogue between the past and present.
Led by Bastidas Architecture, the restoration preserves the building’s original character while introducing new spaces that respond sensitively to its historic setting. Stone arches, vaulted ceilings and exposed timber beams reveal the craftsmanship of traditional Mallorcan architecture.
Two new buildings have been integrated into the property, extending the original residence without overwhelming its proportions or identity. The architecture moves naturally between old and new, using local stone, traditional construction techniques and a restrained material palette to establish a sense of continuity.
Interiors by WIT Architects complement the historic structure with contemporary furnishings, tactile fabrics and carefully considered details. Natural light, warm textures and understated colours create an atmosphere of calm, allowing the architecture itself to remain the central feature.
Beyond the mansion, landscaped gardens and intimate courtyards introduce a softer relationship between the built environment and the Mediterranean landscape. The transition between interior rooms and outdoor spaces becomes an essential part of the architectural experience.
Can Ferrereta demonstrates how thoughtful restoration can give new life to historic buildings without compromising their original identity. Rather than seeking contrast for its own sake, the project finds beauty in proportion, material authenticity and architectural restraint.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
Can Ferrereta illustrates how historic Mediterranean architecture can be sensitively transformed for contemporary use, preserving the character of a traditional Mallorcan residence while introducing a refined architectural language rooted in craftsmanship, simplicity and respect for place.
