CASA MODESTA, ALGARVE
LOCATION: Quatrim do Sul, Olhão, Algarve, Portugal
ARCHITECTURE: PAr — Plataforma de Arquitectura
STYLE: Contemporary Vernacular Architecture / Mediterranean Minimalism
Set within the peaceful landscape of the eastern Algarve, near the Ria Formosa Natural Park, Casa Modesta is an intimate rural retreat that celebrates the simplicity of traditional Portuguese architecture. The project transforms a former family home into a contemporary guesthouse, preserving its connection to the region’s architectural heritage.
Designed by PAr — Plataforma de Arquitectura, the renovation draws inspiration from the modest forms and construction traditions of the Algarve. Whitewashed walls, geometric volumes and carefully framed openings establish a restrained architectural language rooted in the character of the surrounding landscape.
The building’s original identity is preserved through a thoughtful balance between restoration and contemporary intervention. Traditional elements are reinterpreted with clean lines and understated detailing, allowing the architecture to feel both familiar and distinctly modern.
Outdoor spaces play an essential role in the design. Courtyards, terraces and shaded areas extend the living spaces beyond the interior, reflecting the Mediterranean tradition of architecture shaped by climate and everyday life.
Inside, natural materials and locally inspired craftsmanship create a warm, tactile atmosphere. Simple furnishings, neutral tones and carefully considered textures reinforce the sense of calm, while natural light reveals the subtle qualities of each space.
Casa Modesta offers an alternative vision of contemporary hospitality, where architectural character emerges from authenticity rather than spectacle. Its quiet beauty lies in the careful reinterpretation of local building traditions and a close relationship with the Algarve landscape.
