CASA DE SÃO LOURENÇO, SERRA DA ESTRELA

LOCATION: Manteigas, Serra da Estrela, Portugal

ARCHITECTURE: Site Specific Arquitectura

INTERIOR DESIGN: P-06 Atelier

STYLE: Contemporary Mountain Architecture / Heritage Restoration

Perched high in Portugal’s Serra da Estrela mountains, Casa de São Lourenço is a contemporary mountain retreat shaped by its dramatic natural surroundings. Overlooking the glacial valley of the River Zêzere, the hotel combines the architectural heritage of an existing mountain property with a refined contemporary design approach.

The project transforms a historic mountain guesthouse into an intimate hotel, preserving its relationship with the landscape while introducing a new architectural identity. The building’s restrained forms and carefully considered interventions reflect the rugged character of the surrounding terrain.

Large glazed openings frame expansive views of the mountains, allowing the changing weather, natural light and seasonal colours to become an essential part of the interior experience. The architecture creates a quiet dialogue between shelter and exposure, offering a sense of intimacy within the vast landscape.

Natural materials and tactile finishes establish a warm contrast with the dramatic environment outside. Stone, timber and understated contemporary detailing reinforce the connection to the region’s architectural traditions.

Inside, the design combines modern simplicity with references to Portuguese craftsmanship. Carefully selected furnishings, soft textures and a restrained palette create welcoming spaces that remain visually connected to the mountains.

Casa de São Lourenço offers a distinctive interpretation of contemporary mountain hospitality, where architectural restraint, material warmth and carefully framed views create a profound sense of place.
