GUNDARI, FOLEGANDROS.

GUNDARI, FOLEGANDROS.

LOCATION: Folegandros, Greece

ARCHITECTURE: Block722

YEAR: 2024

STYLE: Contemporary Cycladic Minimalism

Perched above the Aegean Sea on the island of Folegandros, Gundari is a contemporary retreat shaped by the rugged beauty of the Cycladic landscape.

Designed by Athens-based architectural studio Block722, the hotel takes its cues from the island’s natural contours and traditional building language. Low-lying structures, earthy tones and carefully considered volumes allow the architecture to settle quietly into its surroundings.

Stone, timber and textured surfaces create a restrained material palette, while generous openings frame uninterrupted views of the sea. Private terraces and pools extend the interiors into the landscape, blurring the boundary between built space and nature.

Rather than imposing itself on the dramatic coastline, Gundari offers a thoughtful interpretation of Cycladic architecture — one defined by simplicity, material honesty and a strong sense of place.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Gundari demonstrates how contemporary hospitality architecture can respond to a powerful natural setting through restraint, local materials and a sensitive relationship with the landscape.
