LOCATION: Melides, Alentejo, Portugal

ARCHITECTURE: Manuel Aires Mateus

YEAR: 2022

STYLE: Sculptural Minimalism / Contemporary Portuguese Architecture

Set among the rolling hills of Portugal’s Alentejo region, PA.TE.OS is a collection of four architect-designed houses that explore the relationship between built form, natural light and the surrounding landscape. Conceived by Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus, the project offers a distinctive interpretation of contemporary rural hospitality.

The architecture is defined by sculptural concrete volumes, generous openings and carefully composed outdoor spaces. Each house is positioned to establish its own relationship with the landscape, creating a sense of privacy while remaining visually connected to the surrounding countryside.

Rather than relying on decorative elements, the design draws its character from proportion, geometry and material simplicity. Solid walls contrast with expansive glazed openings, while sheltered terraces create a gradual transition between interior and exterior spaces.

Natural light plays a central role in the architectural experience. Throughout the day, sunlight moves across the pale surfaces, revealing the depth of openings and the subtle geometry of the buildings.

Inside, the restrained material palette reinforces the sense of calm. Contemporary furnishings and tactile finishes complement the architectural forms without distracting from the landscape beyond.

The four houses share a coherent architectural language while offering distinct spatial experiences. Together, they form a quiet architectural retreat in which privacy, simplicity and the natural environment are closely intertwined.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

PA.TE.OS demonstrates Manuel Aires Mateus’ ability to transform elementary geometric forms into expressive architectural spaces, creating a contemporary interpretation of Portuguese rural living through sculptural simplicity, natural light and a sensitive relationship with the landscape.
