APFELHOTEL TORGGELERHOF

LOCATION: Saltusio, Passeier Valley, South Tyrol, Italy

ARCHITECTURE: NOA – Network of Architecture

YEAR: 2020 (architectural expansion)

STYLE: Contemporary Alpine Architecture / Organic Landscape Integration

Surrounded by apple orchards in South Tyrol’s Passeier Valley, Apfelhotel Torgglerhof offers a distinctive interpretation of contemporary Alpine hospitality. Designed by NOA – Network of Architecture, the hotel’s architectural expansion explores the relationship between traditional rural buildings, organic forms and the cultivated landscape.

The project develops around an existing family-run hotel and agricultural estate. Rather than introducing a single dominant structure, the architects created a collection of new volumes that extend the property while maintaining the intimate scale of its rural surroundings.

The most distinctive elements are the garden suites, conceived as a series of gently curved structures embedded within the orchard landscape. Their rounded forms and planted roofs establish a visual continuity with the surrounding terrain, allowing the architecture to appear partially absorbed by the earth.

Timber and natural materials play a central role in the architectural language. Vertical wooden elements, warm interior surfaces and carefully framed openings create a contemporary interpretation of traditional Alpine construction.

Large windows connect the guest rooms with the surrounding apple trees and mountain scenery. The architecture encourages a close relationship with the landscape, allowing seasonal changes, natural light and the rhythms of the orchard to shape the experience of each space.

The hotel’s wellness facilities continue this dialogue between architecture and nature. Curved forms, planted surfaces and carefully integrated outdoor spaces create an environment in which the boundaries between building and garden become increasingly fluid.

Inside, the design combines contemporary simplicity with a sense of warmth and intimacy. Natural textures, soft colours and understated furnishings reinforce the hotel’s connection to its agricultural setting.

Apfelhotel Torgglerhof demonstrates how contemporary hospitality architecture can evolve from an existing rural property through sensitive additions that respect both its architectural heritage and the surrounding landscape.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Apfelhotel Torgglerhof represents an innovative approach to contemporary Alpine hospitality, where organic architectural forms, planted roofs and natural materials reinterpret rural building traditions while establishing a close relationship between new structures and South Tyrol’s cultivated orchard landscape.
