CHGAGULER HOTEL
LOCATION: Castelrotto, South Tyrol, Italy
ARCHITECTURE: Peter Pichler Architecture
YEAR: 2018
STYLE: Contemporary Alpine Minimalism / Modern Vernacular
Located in the Alpine village of Castelrotto in South Tyrol, Schgaguler Hotel is a striking example of contemporary architecture rooted in regional tradition. Redesigned by Peter Pichler Architecture, the hotel transforms an existing building into a sculptural composition that reinterprets the familiar forms of the surrounding mountain landscape.
The architectural concept draws inspiration from the traditional pitched roofs of Alpine farmhouses. Rather than reproducing these forms literally, the architects translate them into a series of distinctive white façades with sharply defined geometric profiles.
The building is organised into three interconnected volumes, creating a rhythmic composition that responds to the scale of the village. Its restrained exterior palette contrasts with the surrounding historic buildings while maintaining a visual connection to their traditional proportions.
White surfaces and large glazed openings define the architectural character of the hotel. The sculptural façades create a strong interplay of light and shadow, while generous windows frame views towards the Dolomites and the surrounding Alpine landscape.
Inside, the design follows a philosophy of understated simplicity. Natural timber, soft neutral tones and carefully selected furnishings establish a warm atmosphere that balances the clarity of the exterior architecture.
The guest rooms are conceived as calm, light-filled spaces where architectural restraint allows the mountain scenery to become the central visual element. The relationship between interior and exterior is reinforced through carefully positioned openings and a consistent material language.
Schgaguler Hotel demonstrates how the renovation of an existing hospitality building can create a distinctive contemporary identity without losing its connection to local architectural traditions.
