Contemporary lakeside architecture

Set along the eastern shore of Lake Como, Il Sereno introduces a distinctly contemporary presence into a landscape long associated with historic villas and classical gardens. Designed by Patricia Urquiola, the hotel is composed as a series of clean, horizontal volumes that open towards the water, framing the lake and surrounding mountains as an integral part of the architecture.

The building’s restrained geometry is balanced by a rich material palette. Local stone, bronze-toned metal, timber and glass create a tactile composition that feels connected to its setting without relying on historical imitation. Large glazed surfaces draw natural light deep into the interiors, while terraces and balconies extend the living spaces towards the lake.

A defining feature of the design is its relationship with the water. The hotel’s architecture follows the natural slope of the site, allowing the building to appear both grounded in the landscape and suspended above the shoreline. The lakeside swimming pool projects towards the water, creating a striking visual connection between the hotel and the lake beyond.

Inside, Urquiola’s approach combines contemporary furniture, carefully selected materials and a warm, understated palette. The interiors are sophisticated without becoming ornamental, allowing views, textures and proportions to shape the atmosphere. Each space is designed to maintain a strong connection with the surrounding landscape.

Il Sereno offers a modern interpretation of Lake Como hospitality. Rather than reproducing the grandeur of the region’s historic villas, it establishes a new architectural language — one defined by clarity, material sensitivity and an intimate relationship with the lake.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Il Sereno demonstrates how contemporary architecture can contribute to a landscape shaped by centuries of architectural heritage. Patricia Urquiola’s design responds to Lake Como through its proportions, materials and careful framing of views, creating a building that is unmistakably modern yet deeply connected to its setting. Its quiet geometry and lakeside positioning make it a compelling example of contemporary hospitality architecture.
