Set among olive groves outside Ostuni, Masseria Moroseta reinterprets the traditional Puglian farmhouse through a contemporary architectural language. Designed by Andrew Trotter, the retreat draws on the region’s rural building traditions, translating their simplicity and material character into a refined, modern composition.
The architecture is defined by whitewashed volumes, solid walls and a sequence of courtyards. Its forms recall the masseria typology, yet the design avoids literal historic reproduction. Instead, it distils the essence of the vernacular: thick walls, restrained openings, simple geometries and a close relationship with the surrounding agricultural landscape.
Light plays a central role in the experience of the building. The white surfaces reflect the intense southern Italian sun, while deep-set windows and shaded outdoor spaces create a contrast between brightness and shadow. The courtyards offer moments of privacy and calm, connecting the interiors to the landscape while maintaining a sense of enclosure.
Inside, the material palette remains deliberately understated. Natural stone, timber and textured plaster establish a warm, tactile atmosphere, while carefully considered furnishings introduce contemporary comfort without overwhelming the architecture. The spaces feel pared back, allowing the proportions, light and material surfaces to remain the focus.
The outdoor areas extend the architectural experience into the olive grove. A swimming pool, terraces and open views create a fluid relationship between the built environment and the surrounding countryside, making the landscape an essential part of the retreat.
Masseria Moroseta is a thoughtful example of contemporary rural architecture. Its design is rooted in local traditions, yet expressed through a precise and modern sensibility — a balance that gives the building both a strong identity and a timeless quality.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
Masseria Moroseta demonstrates how vernacular architecture can inform contemporary hospitality without becoming pastiche. Through its white volumes, courtyards, restrained materials and careful use of light, the project reinterprets the Puglian masseria as a modern place of retreat. Its strength lies in the clarity of its architecture and its close connection to the agricultural landscape.
