AIRE DE BARDENAS, NAVARRA

AIRE DE BARDENAS, NAVARRA

LOCATION: Tudela, Navarra, Spain

ARCHITECTURE: Emiliano López & Mónica Rivera

YEAR: 2007

STYLE: Contemporary Minimalism / Landscape Architecture

Set within the vast, open landscape of Navarra, Aire de Bardenas is an architectural retreat defined by simplicity, solitude and an intimate relationship with its surroundings. Designed by architects Emiliano López and Mónica Rivera, the hotel offers a distinctive interpretation of contemporary hospitality in the Spanish countryside.

The architecture is composed of a series of low, geometric volumes arranged across the site. Their restrained forms establish a quiet presence within the landscape, allowing the expansive horizon and changing natural light to become central elements of the experience.

Large windows frame uninterrupted views of the surrounding fields, transforming the landscape into an essential part of each interior. The contrast between enclosed, minimalist spaces and the openness of the terrain creates a powerful sense of stillness.

One of the project’s most distinctive architectural features is its use of stacked wooden fruit crates, which form protective screens around parts of the buildings. These elements reference the agricultural character of the region while providing privacy and filtering sunlight.

The interiors follow the same philosophy of restraint. Simple materials, carefully considered proportions and a neutral palette create spaces that feel both contemporary and closely connected to their rural setting.

Rather than competing with the landscape, Aire de Bardenas uses architecture to intensify the experience of it. The project demonstrates how modest forms and thoughtful material choices can create an atmosphere of remarkable architectural clarity.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

Aire de Bardenas is a compelling example of contemporary landscape architecture, where minimal geometric forms, inventive material use and carefully framed views establish a meaningful dialogue between hospitality, agriculture and the natural environment.
