LES COLS PAVELLONS, CATALONIA
LOCATION: Olot, Catalonia, Spain
ARCHITECTURE: RCR Arquitectes
YEAR: 2005
STYLE: Experimental Minimalism / Contemporary Glass Architecture
Located in the volcanic landscape of La Garrotxa, in Catalonia, Les Cols Pavellons offers an extraordinary interpretation of hospitality architecture. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning studio RCR Arquitectes, the project challenges conventional ideas of enclosure, privacy and the relationship between interior space and nature.
Comprising five individual glass pavilions, the accommodation forms part of the wider architectural setting of Les Cols in Olot. Rather than creating traditional hotel rooms, the architects conceived a series of transparent spaces where architecture is reduced to its most essential elements.
Glass walls, reflective surfaces and slender structural components establish a delicate boundary between the built environment and the surrounding landscape. The changing light, vegetation and weather become integral to the experience of each pavilion.
The interiors are deliberately minimal. Carefully considered furnishings and restrained materials allow the architecture itself to take centre stage, while the transparency of the structures encourages a heightened awareness of the natural environment.
Water and reflections play an important role in the spatial composition. The interplay between transparent and mirrored surfaces creates a constantly shifting perception of depth, light and enclosure.
The project reflects RCR Arquitectes’ distinctive approach to architecture, in which material, atmosphere and landscape are treated as inseparable elements of design.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
Les Cols Pavellons demonstrates how radical simplicity can transform the experience of hospitality, creating an intimate relationship between architecture and nature through transparency, reflection and the careful orchestration of space.
