MAISON HELER
LOCATION: Metz, Grand Est, France
ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPT & DESIGN: Philippe Starck
YEAR: 2025
STYLE: Experimental Contemporary Architecture / Architectural Surrealism
Located in the French city of Metz, Maison Heler is an unconventional architectural project conceived by Philippe Starck. Rising above the surrounding urban landscape, the hotel combines a contemporary monolithic tower with a seemingly traditional house positioned on its roof, creating a striking dialogue between architectural familiarity and unexpected form.
The project is defined by the contrast between two distinct architectural languages. The lower structure is a restrained, rectilinear volume characterised by a repetitive façade and a strong vertical presence. Above it sits a pitched-roof house, recalling the domestic architecture of nineteenth-century France.
This unusual composition challenges conventional expectations of scale and context. The familiar silhouette of a house, normally associated with the ground and the intimacy of domestic life, is elevated above the city and transformed into an architectural landmark.
The concept draws upon Starck’s interest in storytelling and the emotional dimensions of design. Rather than treating architecture solely as a functional enclosure, Maison Heler introduces an element of imagination, inviting visitors to question the relationship between buildings, memory and perception.
The tower’s exterior maintains a relatively restrained architectural expression, allowing the rooftop house to become the defining visual element. Its recognisable form contrasts with the contemporary geometry beneath it, producing an unexpected sense of architectural tension.
Inside, the hotel continues the dialogue between contemporary hospitality and a more intimate domestic atmosphere. Carefully composed interiors, tactile materials and distinctive furnishings reinforce the project’s narrative character.
The rooftop house contains a restaurant and offers an unusual spatial experience, placing the familiar proportions of a traditional residence high above the surrounding urban environment.
Maison Heler demonstrates how contemporary hotel architecture can move beyond conventional formal solutions, using contrast, symbolism and architectural storytelling to create a distinctive identity within the city.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
